r⃗, r · Position vector and radiuskm

r⃗ is a vector from the chosen origin. r = |r⃗| is its length; it is not altitude.

v⃗, v · Velocity and speedkm/s

Velocity includes direction. Speed is its nonnegative magnitude.

a⃗, r̈⃗ · Accelerationkm/s²

Rate of change of velocity. Do not confuse vector a⃗ with semi-major axis a.

h⃗, h · Specific angular momentumkm²/s

r⃗ × v⃗; perpendicular to the orbit plane, constant in ideal two-body motion.

e⃗ · Eccentricity vectordimensionless

Points to periapsis; magnitude e. Zero for a circle.

ν, θ, f · True anomalydegrees or radians

Actual angle from periapsis to the spacecraft, measured at the focus.

vᵣ · Radial velocitykm/s

Component along outward r⃗; positive outbound and negative inbound.

vₜ · Transverse velocitykm/s

In-plane component perpendicular to r⃗. The normal direction is perpendicular to the orbit plane.

γ · Flight-path angledegrees

Angle of velocity above local horizontal; atan2(vᵣ,vₜ).

ε · Specific orbital energykm²/s²

Kinetic plus potential energy per unit mass, with potential zero at infinity.

rₚ · Periapsis radiuskm

Closest center-to-center distance; subtract body radius for altitude.

rₐ · Apoapsis radiuskm

Farthest center distance on a bound ellipse; absent for an open trajectory.

a · Semi-major axiskm

Positive for ellipses, negative for hyperbolas in this guide. Not finite for a parabola.

b · Semi-minor axiskm

Short half-axis of an ellipse: a√(1−e²).

p · Semi-latus rectumkm

p = h²/μ = rₚ(1+e); works for all nondegenerate conics.

e · Eccentricitydimensionless

0 circle, between 0 and 1 ellipse, 1 parabola, above 1 hyperbola.

i · Inclinationdegrees

Angle from reference-plane normal to angular momentum, 0°–180°.

Ω · Right ascension of ascending nodedegrees

Angle in reference plane to the northward equator crossing.

ω · Argument of periapsisdegrees

Angle in orbit plane from ascending node to periapsis.

M · Mean anomalydegrees or radians

Clock-like phase n(t−tₚ). It grows uniformly for a fixed elliptic orbit.

E · Eccentric anomalydegrees or radians

Auxiliary ellipse angle; not uniform in time.

coverage · Sampled relay servicepercent

Fraction of sampled time bins with a satellite seeing both the lunar site and Earth.

gap · Longest sampled outageminutes

Longest run of unserved bins within the stated analysis window, without a periodic wrap assumption.

CASE C · ELLIPTICAL

500 × 6,000 km

Longest gap—Nominal constellation
After any one loss—Worst rolling 24 hours
